![]() For internal politics, it means the most nuanced approach to simulating court intrigue any Total War has ever attempted. For external politics, this means you can readily see which people may want to ally with you and which might be played off against one another. 3K also has some pretty interesting siege maps (and awesome maps like the "gate passes" that are unique maps in areas like mountainous choke points across China).įurther, characters also behave as you'd expect them to because they develop relationships with one another over time. Combat is fantastic, although heroes are extraordinarily strong so Records mode is worth a try if you prefer combat with generals retinues and a greater focus on strategy (there's a lot you can read for more info on the differences between the two game modes in 3K, Romance mode and Records mode). The political dynamics of managing your familyĪnd court are like a more polished take on Rome 2 and Attila's dynasty and political systems. Three Kingdoms has incredible depth when it comes to characters and diplomacy in a way that no other Total War has managed (not even close). Troy doesn't hold a candle to Three Kingdoms, you can barely compare the two. Most of this is preference I'm a huge fan of 3K its my favorite TW currently. To me Troy was a less interesting WH in terms of game design it feels like a WH reskin(agents, settlements, troop recruitment no court, or family tree are all the same) I like WH tw but its because you have a lot of unique factions and units, troy doesn't really have much unique going for it beyond it setting. Battle maps are objectively better in 3K as I found troys too small. It has two modes so you don't have to play with larger than life type heroes with crazy abilities. ![]() It also has a better campaign in terms of food, supply, reserves mattering a lot more, something I like other might not like mustering, and redeployment. Three kingdoms is a lot better IMO, you got some court politics, heir and family, wife and marriage politics, troy has only one faction leader with a kind of court mechanic but you stuck with the same faction leader(some might prefer this or not care) with no family tree, or any wife match making in diplomacy. The point of this article is I'm hoping that someone can articulate why Three Kingdoms is better than Troy, or if there even is a difference between the two games. So I'm in a bit of a conundrum of if I don't like a game from 2020, why would I like the same game from a year prior? ![]() I myself feel that Troy does not innovate enough to justify purchase over just replaying Shogun 2. The reason why I write this is because Three Kingdoms is currently on sale and I'm debating purchasing it, however Total War Three Kingdoms has Very Positive reviews in the 80% range, but the reaction I've seen to Troy has been middle of the road, kind of meh. I was really interested in the Hero mechanic which they softly started introducing in Rome 2 but really amped it up in Three Kingdoms by having these solo Hero generals who can take on entire units solo. I only have Troy because Epic gave it away for free on release. Probably happier with the 2 former rather than Troy. I am just as happy with Total War: Rome & Shogun 2 as I am with Troy. I love the Total War franchise however I have not followed it that closely. Think we missed one? Give us a Modmail and suggest new Subreddits to add to the lists!
